There are many things and activities that visitors can explore when they visit Banteay Chhmar. Here, Hanoi Voyages helps you have useful information about Banteay Chhmar.

Things to do in Banteay Chhmar

When you visit Banteay Chhmar, you’ll find a hidden gem in northwest Cambodia, known for its ancient temple ruins, giant stone faces, and tranquil village life. It’s a peaceful alternative to the crowded Angkor temples and perfect for those seeking authentic culture and history.

Banteay Chhmar temple

The main attraction in Banteay Chhmar is the temple itself. It’s a sprawling temple complex with intricately carved galleries, stunning bas-reliefs, and towers.

This massive temple city complex is one of the most intriguing in the Khmer empire, both for its size and its remote location. Never excavated, this fits the picture of a lost Khmer city with its ruined face-towers, carvings, forest surroundings and bird life flying through the temple. It has a romantic and discovery feel to it. It’s one of the best places you should do when you visit Banteay Chhmar.

Like Preah Khan, Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, Banteay Chhmar originally enclosed a city with the temple at the heart. There are no traces of the city that surrounded the temple.

Prasat Yeay Kom

When you visit Banteay Chhmar, don’t miss Prasat Yeay Kom, a Hindu temple north of the main complex. Though much of it has crumbled, the central sanctuary and intricate bas-reliefs remain, with tree roots winding through the stones. Look closely and you’ll spot a beautifully preserved carving of two parrots locked in combat — a rare detail that brings the ruins to life

Prasat Ta Prohm

Another highlight to explore when you visit Banteay Chhmar is Prasat Ta Prohm. Surrounded by a sacred lake and jungle vegetation, this peaceful site preserves a well-kept tower and a fascinating broken relief of Avalokiteshvara, inviting visitors into a tranquil, spiritual atmosphere.

Prasat Ta Nem

Among the highlights to see as you visit Banteay Chhmar is Prasat Ta Nem, located by the western moat facing the causeway of giants. Although only two of the original four faces remain, this temple is considered one of the most significant examples of face towers. What makes it unique is the row of praying figures carved directly below the faces, resembling a necklace, which has helped preserve its distinctive character

Prasat Samnang Tasok

As you visit Banteay Chhmar, don’t miss Prasat Samnang Tasok, also called Lucky Old Hill Temple. Nestled in the forest west of the main complex, it features Bayon-style faces on the central tower and the atmospheric remains of libraries along the approach, creating a truly evocative setting.
