Things to do in Oudong

Oudong Mountain (Phnom Udong)

A great weekend and holiday destination not far from Phnom Penh (about 40 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Phnom Penh) in Cambodia, Southeast Asia. There are still many temples on the top of the mountain.

You’ll need to climb Oudong Mountain, which is really just a hill, to get to the sights. There is an even staircase which leads up the hills and a walkway that runs across the hills past all main points of interest.

Climb the stairs to the top of Oudong Mountain for spectacular views of the plains below. Take your time admiring the breathtaking vistas of the plains below. After the short climb, stop at a picnic shelter at the foot of the hill for a typical Khmer lunch.

Three significant stupas in Oudong

The first stupa is named Damrei Sam Poan. This north western stupa was built by King Chey Chettha II (1618-26) to bury his predecessor who founded Oudong. The main stupa is built on a three-tiered platform rising high above the surrounding jungle.

The second stupa is named Ang Duong after King Norodom’s father. The stupa was built in 1891 by King Norodom to contain the ashes of King Ang Duong (1845-59). The stupa is decorated with colorful tiles.

Mukh Proum, the third stupa, is positioned on the south-eastern side of the three stupas. It is the funeral stupa of King Monivong, who ruled from 1927-1941 and features four faces looking outwards towards the four cardinal directions. In Khmer “mukh” means face.

Arthaross Temple

The original temple was completely destroyed by the Khmer Rouge and was completely rebuilt. It was also known as the “Temple of Eighteen Points” because the temple’s structure was made up of 18 points or corners.

This statue is unique because the Buddha faced north instead of the traditional direction of the East. Within the crumbling walls is a new golden Buddha statue that gleams and glints in the sunshine.

Preah Shakyamuni Chedi

As you descend the Oudong Mountain, you will come across a bridge. Walking to the other side, you came across the Preah Shakyamuni Chedi, a stunning white stupa and Buddhist temple that was completed in 2002. The temple complex also includes a library and a conference center, as well as a number of statues and paintings. The architecture features large elephant carvings and ornate decorations.

Vipassana Buddhist Center

The Vipassana Dhura Buddhist center is located at the foot of the mountain, on the same side as the ancient stupas. It’s a beautiful temple and monastery that houses both male and female monks.
