Built in the early 1900s to guard this vital trading port for the French, the tall auburn-colored tower still overlooks the water and evokes memories of a bygone era.

Wat Moha Leap

If you visit Kampong Cham and want to see something truly unique, make your way to Wat Moha Leap — one of the last surviving wooden pagodas in Cambodia. Built in 1894 and consecrated in 1906, this temple was raised on a platform to guard against seasonal floods.

One of the prominent markets in Kampong Cham is the Kampong Cham Central market, also known as Phsar Kampong Cham or Kampong Cham market.

The Kampong Cham market has a gaudy look similar to the Central market in Phnom Penh, and it has a complete supply of just about anything you might need. In the evening, a night market emerges on the western side. On the perimeter roads, there are numerous photo shops and pharmacies.

Like many traditional markets in Cambodia, visit Kampong Cham market offers a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. You can find seasonal produce sourced from the surrounding countryside.

Kampong Cham has a tropical climate. The weather is getting more and more erratic and it’s difficult to predict when the rains will come, but avoid visiting during the peak rainy period.

  • The cool season occurs between November and March when January is the driest month.

  • March and April are the hottest months and should be avoided at that time. if you don’t want to have a face full of dust every time you go outside.

  • By contrast, the time from May to October is the rainy season in which the wettest month is October.

Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham

Traveling from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham is one of the most common routes, as the capital city lies just about 120 km away. The journey is straightforward, with several convenient options to choose from

By Bus

Phnom Penh is the nearest major city to Kampong Cham, and there are frequent bus services between the two cities. Virak Buntham and Sorya are two local bus companies that service this route.

The journey takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Several bus companies operate this route, and you can purchase tickets at the bus stations or through travel agencies in Phnom Penh.

By Taxi

You can take a taxi, which is the fastest but also the most expensive. It takes around 1-2 hours to get Kampong Cham. A private taxi from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham costs around 40 USD one-way or 50 USD for same-day return.

Siem Reap to Kampong Cham

Getting from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham is a longer but worthwhile journey, linking the temples of Angkor with this riverside town. The distance is around 250 km, and travel time ranges from 6–7 hours depending on the mode of transport.

  • Bus & Minivan: There are no direct buses from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham, so you’ll need to get to Phnom Penh first, and then change buses.

  • Private car / taxi: For more comfort and flexibility, hiring a private car or taxi is a good option. Prices range from 90–120 USD per vehicle, and you can stop along the way for sightseeing or breaks.

  • Motorbike: Adventurous travelers can rent a motorbike in Siem Reap and ride to Kampong Cham. It’s a scenic but challenging journey, so it’s recommended only for experienced riders.
